Lynn Bowen will enter his 14th year coaching Evangel’s cross country and track & field programs.
Bowen has helped the Crusaders land individual qualifiers to the NAIA national cross country championships for six consecutive seasons and 13 runners from Evangel have advanced to nationals since 2005.
With the indoor track program, Evangel has advanced athletes to NAIA national meet for five years in a row.
Under Bowen, Evangel’s outdoor track & field teams have sent qualifiers to the national meet for seven straight years and last season saw James Hafner finish fifth nationally in the 5,000 meter race / walk.
Bowen served as Evangel’s head women’s basketball coach for 16 seasons (1980-81, 1984-85 through 1998-99) collecting a 292-202 record. He coached the program to an NCCAA Division I national championship in 1986 and led the Crusaders to a HAAC tournament championship in 1994 and the team’s first ever NAIA national tournament appearance. He was the co-head coach with Leon Neal as the team went undefeated in the conference and advanced to the NAIA national semifinals in 1995.
Bowen was also served as Evangel’s head softball coach for three seasons (1991-93). He has also served as an associate professor in the Kinesiology Department.
The Evangel alum was also a multi-sport athlete earning four letters in soccer and was also on the baseball team. Bowen taught at Fair Grove for nine years and coached all sports at the junior high level and was the girls’ varsity head basketball for two seasons. He served as an assistant football coach at Fair Gove for six years. He earned a Master’s degree from Missouri State in 1982.
Bowen and his wife, Jan (also a 1973 Evangel graduate), have two children. Their daughter, Tara, is a 1999 Evangel graduate and their son, Tyler, graduated from Evangel in 2002.
