Steve Jenkins is in his 13th season as head golf coach at Evangel University. Men’s golf is the third sport he has been head coach in at Evangel as he is currently the men’s head basketball coach, a post he has held for the last 29 seasons. He also was head baseball coach for five years from 1979-83.
Jenkins was the men’s golf HAAC Coach of the Year in 2010 leading his team to a second place finish in the Heart of America conference tournament and having Evangel’s first player qualify for the NAIA National Championship tournament in Tim McGinnis that season. McGinnis won the HAAC individual championship as well in 2010. The second place finish matched Evangel’s highest finish ever.
Steve Jenkins has been Evangel’s only head coach as he stepped in as the program launched in 1998.
While he has led Evangel golf to success, he has been awarded HAAC Coach of the Year in men’s basketball six times, NAIA-II National Coach of the Year in 2001-02 and led the Crusaders to the NAIA-II National Championship and a 35-1 overall record in 2002. He has more than 500 career coaching wins at Evangel and is the school’s all-time leader in men’s basketball coaching wins and winning percentage.
He also has the second most wins as a head baseball coach at Evangel after compiling a 132-97-3 record during his five seasons.
Jenkins is a 1974 Evangel graduate and has a B.A. degree in psychology and physical education. He graduated summa cum laude and earned four varsity letters in baseball and three in basketball. Jenkins has a Master’s degree from the University of South Florida.
He and his wife Rhonda are both originally from Pittsfield, Illinois but currently reside in Springfield. They have three grown children and two grandchildren.
