Springfield, Mo. – Evangel forward Sierra McSpadden scored 24 points and guard Emily Akins hit free throws down the stretch and finished with 16 as Evangel handed Central Methodist with their first loss of the season with a 63-57 win Thursday at the Ashcroft Center in the Heart of America conference opening game for both teams.

Evangel led 28-27 at halftime, but the Eagles jumped to a four-point lead early in the second half. The Crusaders trailed 48-45 with 5:10 remaining but McSpadden connected on a pair of three’s in the final five minutes and Akins scored 12 of 16 points in the second half.  

McSpadden went 8 for 10 from the field, 5 of 6 from three-point range and 3 for 4 from free throw line. Her 24 points was a season high for the senior from Chelsea, Oklahoma.

Evangel improved to 2-4 and 1-0 in the HAAC. Central Methodist fell to 8-1 and 0-1 in the conference.

Evangel plays a conference game at Benedictine Saturday. Tipoff is 2 p.m. in Atchison, Kan.
