Springfield, Mo. – The Evangel University softball team has announced seven player signings including a signee for the 2014-15 school year. The signings include five high school players and two college transfers.
Infielder Megan Washam has signed with Evangel out of Corinth, Texas, Guyer High School and the Texas Glory-Lusk summer softball club. Washam has played varsity softball since her freshman year and will enter the season with a .455 career average. She is a two-time First Team All-Area selection in the Dallas area and was the Freshman Newcomer of the Year in high school. Washam is the leaders and founder of the I AM SECOND Christian organization in her high school.
“Megan is a solid all-around player who can play anywhere on the field,” said Evangel head coach Jerry Breaux. “She is a triple-threat slap-hitter with a versatile defensive game. I like her smart, savvy play on the field with the background and experience to make a difference. She is a great student as well and we are thrilled she is joining our university and program.”
Evangel will add another Texas product with infielder Rebel Robinson. Robinson is a shortstop from Crowley, Texas, Crowley HS and the Texas Glory-Poole club organization. She has been named her school’s Defensive Player of the Year in each of her three years at Crowley and has been a two-time All-District selection. Robinson is an Honor Roll student,
member of the National Honor Society and volunteers at the Animal Shelter and House of Hope in the Fort Worth area.
“Rebel is a quality defensive player and her accomplishment shows that,” said Breaux. “She can play anywhere on the
infield but shortstop is her spot. She brings outstanding experience and background as a middle infielder. She is an excellent student and we can look forward to her wearing the EU uniform.”
Outfielder Cassidy Gillihan has also signed with Evangel from Sterling, Illinois. Gillihan has been a two-time all-conference selection in the Northern Illinois-Big 12 league and will enter her senior year with a .408 career average having played varsity since her freshman year. She was also an all-academic selection in her conference. Gillihan also plays for the Illinois Sharks summer team.
“Cassidy has terrific speed with a triple-threat offensive game,” noted Breaux. “She compliments her offensive abilities with an outstanding defensive game making her a complete player. She does excellent work in the classroom and will be an excellent addition to our team and program.”
Catcher Paige Zahner has also signed with the Crusaders out of Burlington Community High School in Iowa and the MD
Adrenalin club team. Zahner was an all-state selection in Iowa last year as a junior and won her second career selection as an All-Hawkeye Conference pick in addition to being named All-District. In 40 games last year, she hit .383 with 6 home runs, 41 runs batted with 19 doubles, one triple, 36 runs scored and only struck out 8 times in 133 at-bats. She posted a .423 on-base percentage and a .677 slugging percentage. Zahner is a two-time conference all-academic
“I am very excited about Paige coming our way,” said Breaux. “She is a solid receiver, blocker and thrower with a lot of
pop in her bat. She is ready to play at the next level. Paige is also a scholar-athlete with her excellent academic success and will be a terrific student-athlete for us.”
Joining Evangel for the upcoming season will be Kasie Zukow transferring from Mt. San Antonio Community College
in California. Zukow has played infield and outfield and is currently redshirting and transfer to Evangel this Spring. She hit .467 at Santiago High School in Corona, California and earned the Slugger Award for her summer team, the Corona Wildcats, at the Colorado Sparkler Tournament that her team won.
“Kasie has a terrific background and resume,” said Breaux. “She has been on some very successful championship teams
with her summer and high school teams and will provide us with some immediate help. We are excited for her to join our program for the coming 2013 season and the next four years.”
Brittani Sampson will transfer to Evangel in the 2013-14 school year from Marian (Ala.) Military Community College. The Yucaipa, California native was her team’s Pitcher of the Year as a freshman last year and earned three varsity letters for Loma Linda High School in California.
“Brittani will bring an ace pitcher mentality to our program being the top pitcher at Marion for two years,” noted Breaux. “She knows how to pitch and has all the pitches in her arsenal. She will have two years of eligibility when she joins the EU program next Fall. I expect her to provide help right away as an experienced college pitcher. In addition, she is an excellent student and will help us to continue our team academic excellence in the classroom.”
Evangel has also received a commitment for the 2014-15 season from Ellie Williams. Williams is currently a junior at a Kansas City area home school organization and plays ASA / USSSA summer softball for the Kansas City Jazz. She was her team’s MVP last year after hitting .522 with 6 home runs, 52 RBI’s with 84 hits, 21 doubles and 11 triples. Williams was selected for the USSSA All-State tournament team. She was also an Honor Roll student, president of the High School Youth Pursuing Excellence program and the founder of her prayer group.
“We are thrilled to announce that we have received an early commitment from Ellie,” said Breaux. “She is an outstanding
player and slugger. She’s a lefty who can really swing with the ability to put up big offensive numbers. She also does a terrific job in the classroom and will be a great fit for EU. I am very excited about Ellie coming our way and we look forward to her being a future slugger and first baseman for the Crusaders.”
Evangel went 34-13 last season and will open their 2013 season on Feb. 9 at Christian Brothers University in Memphis,
