Springfield, Mo. – Evangel University head football coach Brenton Illum has made another addition to his coaching staff with the hiring of Dan Wernick as wide receivers coach and video coordinator.
“Danny was recommended to me by a good friend and I’m very impressed with the quality of his work so far,” said Illum. “He played in our conference and he’s worked with tremendous coaches the past two years at Winona State. He brings a great attitude to Evangel and will do a great job of pushing our stellar receiving corps to reach their potential.”
At Winona State (Minn.), Wernick served as wide receivers coach during the 2012 season and defensive backs coach two years ago. Wernick helped the Warriors, an NCAA-II program, to a 10-2 record last year and a Mineral Water Bowl victory over Lindenwood. They have gone 17-6 in the last two years combined.
Wernick played two seasons at quarterback for Culver-Stockton and was named an All-Heart of America conference performer in his senior year. He passed for 939 yards in 11 games while rushing for another 476 yards during the 2010 season. Wernick was also an NAIA Academic All-American that season.
The Alma, Michigan native played his first two college seasons at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan and has graduated from Winona State with a degree in Psychology.
The Crusaders ended last season 7-4 and ranked 23rd nationally in the final NAIA poll. They are scheduled to open the 2013 season Sept. 14 at Kansas Wesleyan.
