St. Joseph, Mo. – Avila scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Evangel 3-2 Friday in the Heart of America conference tournament in St. Joseph, Mo.

The game was postponed early Friday morning but league officials changed the schedule and play resumed this afternoon.

The Eagles won the game after three walks from reliever Nathan Huckaby and Anthpny Herrera drove in the winning run on a one-out ground ball.

Evangel tied the game in the top of the ninth at 2-2. Christian Maciel started the inning with a single, got to second base on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Joes. The second wild pitch of the inning scored Maciel to even the game.

Avila starter Tyler Osbourne got the win going all nine innings allowing 6 hits, 2 runs and 1 earned run while walking 1 and striking out 8. Sam Garrisison started for Evangel and went 8 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 runs with 5 walks and 7 strikeouts but did not figure in the decision.

Jake Garrison went 2 for 4 at the plate for Evangel with an RBI.

The loss is Evangel’s first loss of the tournament and they advance to Game 8 of the tournament to face Peru State. The game, as of the writing of this news release, is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. The tournament schedule is subject to change.
