Mobile, Ala. – Evangel lost to 11th ranked Vanguard (Calif.) 8-1 in the opening round of the NAIA national women’s tennis championships this afternoon in Mobile, Alabama.
The Crusaders earned a point winning a doubles match as Amy Grossklag and Ali Sivinski defeated Juliet Labarthe and Michaele Sullivan 9-7. Evangel’s doubles pair of Phine Mulumba and Kailey Roland was edged by Melanie Parker and Anita Taranto 8-5. Jenna Elliott and Kelly Bush fell to Nina Pudar and Gabriele Alford 8-2.
Evangel’s top singles player, Amy Grossklag, lost 6-2, 6-1 to Juliet Labarthe. Grossklag, a sophomore from Bonita Springs, Florida, entered the event ranked 14th nationally among singles players but was matched up with the 10th ranked Labarthe.
Ali Sivinski, a freshman from Omaha, Nebraska, pushed Michaele Sullivan to a third set falling 5-7, 6-0, 10-4.
The loss ends Evangel’s season at 11-4 and improved Vanguard to 12-16.
Evangel’s national tournament appearance was the school’s first under the NAIA’s current match-play format and their first national tournament bid in women’s tennis since 1984. The Crusaders won back-to-back District 16 championships in 1983 and 1984 advancing to national tournament play in an individual and doubles tournament formats.
