Baseball has five named all-conference; Blake McKnight named to first team

Springfield, Mo. – Evangel’s baseball team had five players named All-Heart of America conference performers and Blake McKnight was named to the All-HAAC First Team.

McKnight, a senior pitcher from O’Fallon, Missouri, led the conference with a 1.56 earned run average while posting an 11-3 record. His 11 wins also led the conference as did his .156 opposing batters average, his 92.1 innings pitched and his total of 83 strikeouts.

Sophomore OF Brandon Cobb was named to the all-conference Second Team. The Nixa product led the Crusaders in hitting with a .318 average. He had one home run, 13 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.

Three other Crusaders were named honorable mention performers including: 3B Jeff Cullen, a senior from Moreno Valley, California, hit .297 with 3 homers and 17 RBIs; Springfield-Parkview product Darin Francis hit .272 with 3 home runs and 19 RBIs as a catcher; and starting pitcher Matt Myers, a senior from Chandler, Arizona, went 7-5 with a 3.10 ERA and 56 strikeouts against just 15 walks in 87 innings.

Jeff Childers won a conference Gold Glove Award. Childers, a junior from Conway, Missouri  was named the league’s top defensive player in left field.

Evangel won a program record 32 games in the 2013 season going 32-19 and 16-10 in the Heart of America conference.
