Springfield, Mo. – Evangel University track and field has three participants competing this week in the NAIA National Championship meet hosted by Indiana Wesleyan in Marion, Indiana.
James Hafner, a junior from Richmond, Michigan, qualified for the national meet in the 5,000 meter race / walk. The event is scheduled for Friday afternoon. Hafner owns Evangel’s school record and finished second in the Heart of America conference meet. He is competing in his first national championship outdoor meet.
Men’s runner Brandon Hoffman will run in the marathon. The senior from Woodstock, Georgia, won a half-marathon and posted a national meet qualifying time in the Highline Run outside Springfield in late March.
Freshman Emily Perona will compete in the women’s marathon at the national meet. She is Evangel’s only women’s national qualifier this season. The St. James, Missouri native won the women’s division and qualified for the national meet at the Highline Run half-marathon earlier this year.
The men’s and women’s marathon is scheduled for Saturday morning.
This season marks the seventh straight season Evangel has advanced athletes to the NAIA national championship outdoor meet.
