Men's basketball announces three signees for 2013-14

Springfield, Mo. – The Evangel University men’s basketball has announced three signings for the 2013-14 season.

The Crusaders have signed Republic forward Marcus Miller, forward Chad Stegeman from Fatima, Missouri and Lee’s Summit North HS guard Richard Chapman.

Miller played for Republic’s Class 4 state championship team that finished with a 28-4 record under head coach Treyvor Fisher. The 6-7 was an All-State selection in Class 4 by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association as he averaged 8.4 points and 5 rebounds per game. He shot better than 60 percent from the field and blocked a team-high 40 shots. Miller’s basket following an offensive rebound with 6.5 seconds left gave the Tigers a 39-38 win over Liberty North in the state semifinals as Republic went on the win the championship game later the same weekend.

Chad Stegeman helped his team to the Class 3 state final four on a Fatima Comets team that went 28-3. The 6-7 forward averaged 10.5 points, 7 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. He was a first team all-conference and all-district selection and served as their team captain during his junior and senior seasons. Fatima’s final four appearance marked their first district championship and deepest state tournament run in 17 years.

Richard Chapman, a 6-3 guard from Lee’s Summit North, averaged 15.1 points, 3 assists and 1.5 steals. Chapman shot 45 percent from the field and connected on 66 three-pointers in 23 games while hitting 75 percent of his free throws. He was a four year starter at the varsity level, a three-time all-conference selection and a two-time all-district pick.

Evangel returns three starters and seven lettermen from a team that went 27-6, won the Heart of America conference championship and advanced to the round of 16 at the NAIA-I National Championship Tournament last season.  Head coach Steve Jenkins will be returning for his 32nd year at the helm in 2013-14.
