Tennis opens strong at Missouri Valley

Springfield, Mo. – The Evangel women’s team opened the fall individual season at Missouri Valley last weekend and captured the doubles title in the top flight.

The doubles team of Amy Grossklag-Fritz and Jenna Elliott won the A-flight tournament winning in the semifinals following their opening round bye and then winning the championship 8-4 over Ursula Alvardo/Ana Mayagoitia from Ashford (Iowa).

Grossklag-Fritz, a junior from Bonita Springs, Florida, advanced to the singles championship in the A-flight but withdrew from the finals. Meanwhile, Elliott, a sophomore from Green, Ohio, advanced to the semifinals.

In her college debut, Springfield-Hillcrest product Breanna Feemster won her first match with 6-2, 6-3 win over Courtney Huels from Stephens (Mo.) but then lost in the semifinals in the B-flight bracket.

Evangel finished the tournament with their players going 12-7 but three of the losses were defaulted to the opposition. The Crusaders went 12-4 in matches decided on the court.
