Football falls 38-28 at Kansas Wesleyan in opener

Salina, Kan. – Evangel lost their season opener falling at Kansas Wesleyan 38-28 Saturday night in Salina, Kan.

The Crusaders battled back from a 14-0 deficit to tie the game at halftime 14-14, then tied the game again at 21-21 midway through the third quarter. Evangel,  however, could not respond when Kansas Wesleyan took a 28-21 lead after a 23 yard touchdown pass from QB Trey Dallas to WR Zach McClain.

The Coyotes built a 38-21 lead before Evangel pulled within 10 points of the lead on an 8-yard TD throw from Andrew Brimhall to WR Jesse Vaughn. The score was Vaughn’s third touchdown catch of the night as he had five receptions for 89 yards.

Kansas Wesleyan controlled the ball most of the night owning a time of possession advantage of 40:38 to 20:22. The Coyotes got 191 rushing yards from RB Taylor Sachs on 36 carries while Dallas went 22 for 35 with 1 interception and 2 touchdowns. Zach McClain had 11 receptions for 167 yards and a TD.

Evangel’s Otis Brown rushed for 112 yards on 16 carries and Kenney Bennett led the Crusaders defense with 13 tackles.

The Crusaders start 0-1 while Kansas Wesleyan improved to 1-1.

Evangel opens Heart of America conference play next week when they play at Avila in Kansas City at 1 p.m.
