Kansas City, Mo. – Evangel lost to seventh seeded Talladega (Ala.) 88-71 in the NAIA-I National Championship Tournament opening round at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

The game was tied 33-33 at halftime but Talladega opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take the lead for good. The Tornadoes put the Crusaders behind by 12 but Evangel cut the lead to five. After Talladega built back their double-digit lead, a Richard Chapman three with eight minutes left got Evangel back to a five-point deficit but the Crusaders got no closer.

Talladega guard Charles Winborne, who had NCAA-I stops at Loyola (Ill.) and Louisiana-Monroe, had a game-high 38 points on 11 for 16 shooting from the field and 8 for 12 from three-point range. Brandon Peters added 21 points.

Evangel got 20 points from Zack Kleine and 19 from J.J. Williams as the two seniors played their final games of their Evangel careers. Junior forward Korry Tillery had 15 points and a career high 17 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season.

The Tornadoes shot 55 percent from the field in the game including going 17 for 26 in the second half while connecting on 7 of their 9 three-point attempts in the second half.

Evangel owned a 40-27 rebound advantage but shot 40 percent from the field and was just 7 for 29 from three-point range.

Evangel ends their season with a 23-11 record while Talladega advances to the second round with a 29-5 record.
