Professional Information: Originally from Colorado, Dr. Michael Kolstad graduated from Evangel University in 1988, completing the Bachelor of Music Education degree. While at Evangel, he was awarded the prized Certificate of Performance. He holds both Masters (awarded in 1990) and Doctoral (awarded in 1996) degrees in trombone performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.Dr. Kolstad currently is the Vice President of University Advancement.
During his tenure at Evangel, he has made significant contributions in the music field, not only at Evangel University but locally and nationally as well. Dr. Kolstad is the founder and director of the Evangel University Summer Music Camp and the Evangel University Honors Academy which have brought more than 800 prospective students to the Evangel campus. He is the founder of the Evangel Jazz Ensemble and Evangel Trombone Academy (for local junior and high school students). In addition, Dr. Kolstad has been instrumental in the development of technology applications in the music department. In 2006, he was recognized by the Springfield Business Journal as one of "40 Under 40" which acknowledges the achievements of young professionals in southwest Missouri. In 2000, he was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award by the Alumni Association at Evangel University. He was given the Orville and Jewel Mills Young Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship, and Service in 2010.
Besides his commitments to Evangel University, he has taught at several universities and colleges including Drury University, Central Bible College, and Baptist Bible College, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the past, he has been on the faculty of the Missouri Fine Arts Academy (an honors camp for outstanding high school age musicians). Dr. Kolstad has contributed to several published articles for the International Trombone Association Journal. Active in his church and community, he is the orchestra director at Central Assembly of God. In 2003, he conducted the Assemblies of God National Fine Arts Festival Orchestra on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
As a trombonist, he has played with numerous ensembles and symphonies including the Springfield (MO) Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Durham Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Roanoke (VA) Symphony, the Denver Kicks (a professional big band based in Denver Colorado), and the American Trombone Choir. Dr. Kolstad has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe. His credits include performances with Louis Bellson, Peter Nero, Robert Goulet, Manheim Steamroller, and Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. In demand as an adjudicator and clinician, he has given numerous recitals and masterclasses, including (in 1999), being a presenter at the International Trombone Festival hosted at the State University of New York College at Potsdam.
Dr. Kolstad is married to Paula (1988 E.U. graduate) and has one daughter, Madison, and one son, Chase. His brother (Kevin), sister (Amber Tipps), and brother-in-law (Steven Tipps) are all alumni of Evangel University.
