David Smith

I welcome you to the theatre site. I want to talk to you directly if I may, because I'm excited about our future. We have a history (30 years) of providing very marketable practitioners in the performing and design arts. We provide advice from professionals in the field and have a very well rounded theatre facility and hands-on environment. Please, let me council with you and see if Evangel is the right place for you.

E.—1996 Kansas City, MO Seminars as Free Lance Teacher About two a year from 1970’s -- present Fine Arts Honors Academy Evangel University Last Week of June, but now discontinued Mission Statement During the last twenty-four years I have been involved in Christian Higher Education, professional theatre or performing theatre ministry in churches internationally. I have had to teach every aspect of theatre while teaching at Evangel. By being a one-person division of the Humanities Department at Evangel, I have had to take “found spaces” and make them into “theatre spaces.” Until last year I have spent twenty-two years using a building, which was once a part of an Army hospital, and converting it into a working theatre space servicing an undergraduate theatre major. We have since 2002 been in a new theatre that has a small proscenium and fly-loft. My administration allowed me to collaborate with the architects and I am quite proud of what is now here at Evangel University. I envision creating a center for Christian performing and designing artists to train and eventually mentor their own students, should the Lord tarry. I have always seen myself as an extension Oral Roberts University and strive with all of my energies to try to produce Christians who happen to be qualified performance and visual artists and not artists who happen to be Christian. I travel with my wife during the year to “do” what I “teach.” I believe that whether my presence is on campus or on the road the Kingdom of God will be served. If God’s Kingdom is served my connections with the university will be served without undermining both pursuits. I have successfully balanced traveling personal ministry and academic responsibilities without compromising the integrity of my academic programs. In fact, demonstrating to students that I “do” what I “teach” the ministry of both is strengthened: the academic program and my connection with the church.

Job Responsibilities: I oversee the the artistic and practical side of all theatre productions. I have designed the curriculum of all theatre classes including: History, 2 Directing classes, 3 Acting courses, Stage Design with respective allied concerns such as lighting, stagecraft and stage makeup.
