Dr. Kevin A. Hawkins

I started work at Evangel University in the Fall of 2015. I am in charge of students working on their music education degrees (BME). As a former Springfield Public School teacher (Glendale High School Choral Director and Department Head from 1997-2009), and Springfield Public Schools Teacher of the Year (2005-2006), I had the opportunity to supervise several student teachers from Evangel University. I was impressed by their knowledge of the material and maturity level. I am thrilled to be a part of Evangel University and continue the wonderful legacy of this music department. Please let me know if I can assist you in any way.

Started Work: Fall 2015

Favorite Thing About Work: Connecting with students and building personal relationships with them. Attending chapel services and watching students lead in worship. Reading God's Word and praying with students, staff, and faculty.

Favorite Memory as a Student: There were a few teachers I had as a student who believed in me and challenged me to pursue my passions (one in elementary school, one in high school, and one in college). I don't remember the specific details of what they taught me. But, I do remember they treated me with patience, dignity, and compassion. When I was recognized as Teacher of the Year for Springfield Public Schools in 2005-2006, I was able to recognize them for their influence. I want to be a "person of influence" for every student in my class.

Originally From: Springfield, MO

Personal Information: I love equipping and training pre-service music teachers. Giving them opportunities to direct and lead the University Chorus. I love watching them growing into Christ-like examples and using their talents, gifts, and skills to teach and touch others in their realm of influence. I enjoy traveling around the world with my wife, spending time with my kids and grandsons, working with my hands on woodworking projects, yard work, remodeling projects, and writing and arranging music.

Other: I am a licensed and ordained minister and have worked in the local church for three decades as a Music Minister/Worship Pastor in Missouri, Texas, and Mississippi. My wife and I have been married for 35 years and we have two grown children and two grandchildren. We have traveled to over 35 countries around the world and my wife grew up in Nigeria. Her parents were Southern Baptist missionaries for over 30 years. Before coming to Evangel, I was the Worship Pastor/Executive Staff Member at Second Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri.
